Banish thoughts of three-wheeled cars, camel donkey jackets and Nelson Mandela House now. Forget about fiery London riot scenes. Peckham is having a renaissance of music, fashion and general radness.
Rich in derelict buildings and plentiful in local art students (think Goldsmiths, Camberwell and LCC), it was only a matter of time before the unassuming suburb of Peckham would be rivalling Southern party hubs like Brixton, New Cross and Vauxhall for lo-fi good times.
Bar Story on Blenheim Grove does huge pizzas, epic sorbet cocktails and it’s sister venue, The Sassoon Gallery, opens under the arches this June. With secret guests, DJs, exhibitions and weekly parties it’s set to be a summer time hang out.
Frank’s Cafe and Campari Bar, the now famous bar top on the roof of the Odeon’s multi storey car park (reopens this June), is another arty drinking hot spot with beautiful views across the city.
Try The Bussey Building for sell-out party nights or Bellenden Road (bell end? Chortle!) restaurants for cheap eats.
So, if the thought of sitting on the curb outside your usual East London drinking den gives you a sense of summer déjà vu, drag yourself south of the river for new adventures.
You may be pleasantly surprised. Go put Peckham on the map.
