Coats and hats are going to be BIG this Autumn. Literally. Super-sized, in fact.
Imagine that feeling you got wearing your mum’s coat as a kid. It may well have been a giant brooch-covered garment, smelling of Elizabeth Arden that kept tripping you up but magically, grown-up style felt in reach.
By going oversized you should feel whimsical, fantastic, exaggerated and elegant all at once. And look much better now than you did when you were ten. Think Acne, Chloe and Proenza Schouler rather than Debenhams this time round.
The Marc Jacobs show last New York Fashion Week most set the bar for oversized proportions and his AW12 campaign imagery centres around his giant catwalk headgear. Reminiscent of the final scenes of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, two models grimace on the beach wearing giant floppy hats looking like they’ve seen better days. That’s hot, right?
To follow suit, start by laying off food and Fake Bake now. That zombified Helena Bonham Carter thing in a gigantic furry fedora will be big news very soon.
