This week, fashspiration fans, we’re going to take the sun-soaked Aussie rapper-gone-bad, Iggy Azelea and mix her with everyone’s favourite wholesome anti-feminist icon, Malibu Barbie, to get our trash-fash look.
Iggy has tracks called Pu$$y and Bounce, is influenced by the South American hip-hop scene and draws sartorial inspiration from Grace Kelly (err really?), Gwen Stefani (we LOVE you) and the Spice Girls (guuurrrrlll POWER!).
Malibu Barbie has a BFF Ken, prances about on the Californian coast and her look consists of high-cut towelling onesies, sun-kissed oiled limbs and a permanent blow-dry.
Together they blend to create the modern American dream. A vision of impeccable grooming, bouncy blonde manes and doll-like curves with attitude.
Let’s break down some key SS13 looks and how they work for the fashionable pair:
Candyfloss shades
Seen at: Erdem, Christopher Kane and Mulberry.
Before you ramp up the HOT pinks for AW13 indulge in some sugary girliness. Malibu Barbie loves her baby blue towelling playsuit and high waist knicker-shorts. Lemon yellow accessories can also work. Iggy loves her statement swimwear. Perhaps she could incorporate more Malibu pinks into her stage look with these towelling wedges.
Cropped jackets
Seen at: Balenciaga and Chanel.
An easy beach cover-up for Malibu Barbie and still allows Iggy to flash her tiny waist.
Flashes of neon
Seen at: Simone Rocha and Proenza Schouler.
Being partial to a bit of beach-volleyball means Malibu Barbie can play the sports darling as well as the goddess. Flashes of neon do just that. Iggy knows that neon means all eyes will be on her. Look out for added scuba details, zips and perforation.
Pencil skirts
Seen at: Roland Mouret, Prada and Michael Van Der Ham.
Not super practical for sunbathing or grinding but an absolute MUST to show off that incredible rear. Think Malibu Barbie on duty, perhaps with lens-free black frames (‘to look intelligent’) during the week. Iggy would wear hers with a bra and cropped bomber jacket.
Sheer fabrics
Seen at: Haider Ackermann and Nina Ricci.
A godsend for Malibu Barbie’s flirty but innocent style. Sheer fabrics can take her from beach to bar in pink ribbon and 70s canary yellow. Iggy could work sheers with sexy midriff panels and intentional VPL.
Finally, all of the above trends can be amplified by adding an MEGA tan (faux is allowed), animal print, sunblock lips, LOTS of gold and white shoes or roller-skates for fabulous 70s-beach/Pu$$y-rapper Americana effect.
