For the most part, Goths on the street are a pretty unappealing bunch. In the real world they’re just too easy to parody: heavy eyes, massive talent and a don’t-give-a-shit attitude is the vision. Awkward PVC clad anti-fashion statements whilst queuing for a steak bake in Greggs is the reality.
Clever Goths know the importance of context, props and a bit of set design. They need to be on a stage, surrounded by a brooding gang or with buckets of dry ice.
This is where the dark side in film and music comes into its enigmatic own. The Black Belles are signed to Jack White’s Third Man Records and have songs that appear on the Elvira show (TICK!).
A fedora-clad Nashville gang, The Black Belles do Black Lips-tinged garage rock and matching hats. They look like chief bridesmaids at the wedding of Lydia and Beetlejuice.
Check them next Thursday 10th May at Camden’s Barfly before they go all Twilight on your ass and take over the world.
