Oh Boy // Rihanna and the rise of the monogram trend

Rihanna on Jonathan Ross made a style statement this weekend by wearing the Boy London label top-to-toe.

Whilst this look could have been a desperate cringe (Daniella Westbrook and her matching Burberry pram spring to mind), the results of RiRi’s social experiment were rather more positive: sales of Boy London immediately rose  – up by 45% in Selfridges alone – and the nineties monogram trend (‘label’ blocking your outfit) has quickly gathered pace.

Monogram is a fashion-victim’s trend, but the secret is to own it. RiRi (or her stylist) cleverly picked a street-credible brand that already had a great musical heritage. Selfridges describe the label as ‘underground’, though this is a little ironic seeing at how overexposed it has instantly become.

Being fashion gold-dust, Rihanna wore the logo with the confidence of an established icon. Lastly though (and perhaps most importantly) she wore it whilst being tongue-in-cheek, playfully dancing around a table.

Take note logo fans, if you insist on wearing a full monogram outfit, a wink and a smile is your best accessory.
