Style bite // Mary Katrantzou S/S’12: carnation catwalk + mismatched prints

The Mary Katrantzou S/S’12 show notes summed up the collection:

Man meets machine meets mother earth, an army of petal, metal, print…

And we loved the prints which ranged from vibrant florals, hazy meadows to industrial and mechanical.  With her mix of rough and smooth; masculine and femine, Katrantzou’s cuts of cloth are truly amazing and she really shows there can be beauty in machine aesthetics.

However, at times all these elements combined in one look can be a bit much and the industrial prints felt a tad cold and wintry against the bright florals.

The big finale was a rigid dress was constructed out of metal flowers and cans. In comparison to the previous outfits it looked like it could have been a GCSE art project created against the brief ‘recycling rubish’ or ‘glitter not litter’.

Our hearts also went out to the the models who drew the short straws in the make-up chair, having to strut their stuff down the carnation lined catwalk in Smurf blue lipstick.
