The seven essential items every wardrobe should contain. According to Donna Karan.

Seven easy pieces?

Back in her day (the 80’s) Donna Karan pioneered the idea that your wardrobe can be made up of seven pieces of clothing. Whenever I think about this – which I do a LOT – I picture my overflowing laundry basket/things to take to the drycleaners that definately make up more than seven. Probably more like 50 actually.
(But DK probably has an army of minions to do the dry cleaning run and put the Fairy non bio in the machine for her.)

The pieces are:

  • A bodysuit
  • A pair of “pants” *snigger*
  • A coat
  • A jacket
  • A blouse or “turtleneck” *inane snigger*
  • A skirt
  • An evening dress

I’m breaking out into a sweat just imagining my sparse wardrobe. Does it mean this is a template, that I can have 10 pairs of “pants”, 10 coats, 10 jackets, 10 skirts…. Or does it actually mean singular?

*I think it means singular*

My 7 pieces (subject to change at any time)

NOT a bodysuit.

I do own one but only wear it when wearing high waisted trews as I hate the poppers. I’ll have a black vest please.

A pair of “pants”

Can I have jeans? As skinny as is humanly possible.

A coat

Well yes but WHICH ONE? I need a parka for practical mummy days when you stand in the park in the freezing cold, I need a foxy going out leopard print number and I need a classic cut wool for when I need to look vaguely put together. Sorry Donna I need THREE coats.

A jacket

Yes but I’m a coat girl, not a jacket one. Although I am liking a TS Boutique leather biker but am slightly worried I will look like a butch lesbian..

A blouse or “turtle neck”…

Does a breton top count? Good. I am addicted to stripes and especially stripes by Monseuir Petit Bateau. Merci.

A skirt…

I’m a dress girl not a skirt one – see below – but I’ll have a stretchy jersey maxi to be polite.

A dress…

This is HARD. I LOVE dresses, but definately need a maxi, a floral number and a LBD.

There. Easy! Seven. Sorry, eleven. And I’m not sure about only having one top and one pair of jeans. Not with my slapdash approach to my laundry basket.

She MUST mean multiples – yes?

Donna’s “7 Easy Pieces” were the items contained in her own New York fashion collection at the time. I don’t believe she was ever trying to say that those were the only pieces anyone could ever have in their wardrobe!

Anyway, thanks for naming them. I had a hard time finding an exact list of what the original 7 pieces were.

Take everything we say with a massive, sarcastic pinch of salt. As we did DK’s advice. I mean, SEVEN ITEMS only? SRSLY???? 😉
