Eurovision UK 2014 Molly Smitten-Downes

UK Eurovision entry 2014 // Molly Smitten-Downes – Children of the Universe

While we’re slightly disappointed that Geri Halliwell/Wet Wet Wet/Rylan won’t be reppin’ the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014, we must admit we’re slightly relieved to have a credible artist singing for the nation this year.

Step forward Molly Smitten-Downes (who?) with her song Children of the Universe. Following in the footsteps of Blue, Bonnie Tyler and Engelbert Humperdinck (sweet Jesus), the BBC have finally realised that it’s not about getting a (shit) act but the song itself.

We really do seem to have a plan of attack this year. Children of the Universe is perfect for Eurovision. Co-written with Swedish Producer Anders Hansson, it’s the sort of ‘peace and love’ fodder that always does well there. And the song itself ISN’T HALF BAD with a good, anthemic chorus. I caught myself humming along to it after a couple of listens. And crucially, Molly can actually sing live (we’re looking at YOU, Katie Price).

And if you’re wondering where you’ve seen/heard Molly before, she had a ‘hit’ in 2009 with Raindrops (Encore Une Fois) as part of dance act STUNT who ruined the Sash track a treat, look:

She was (re)discovered through the BBC Introducing scheme, which has brought us the likes of Jake Bugg and Florence and the Machine, but we will have to tune in on Saturday 10th May to see if Eurovision is SMITTEN with Molly.
