The Pierces

We asked The Pierces questions. And they answered!

The Pierces

Sisters doing it for themselves, right here. And they have been for the last ten years, atch. You can’t fail to have heard of The Pierces and their dreamy, folky sound. Hell, I even ear wigged one of their tracks on Top Gear last week. You know you’ve made it when Jezza Clarkson drives a reasonably priced car along to your wanton tones.

Born in Birmingham (no, not that Birmingham. The one in Alabama), The Pierces always look fierce(s) – and their floaty, whimsical ’70s sense of style is EXACTLY how I want to look at this year’s festivals. I won’t though. I’ll end up in the standard issue denim cut-offs with loo roll stuck to my boot.

Part ABBA, part The Mamas & The Papas (sound, obviously. Not the rotund appearance); a dash of Fleetwood Mac and a whole heap of West Coast sunniness, these siblings harmonise with the ease of Uri Geller bending the contents of his cutlery drawer.

Here’s a quick fire Q&A with Cat (the blonde one, bozos)…

Describe your sound in three words?
Happy. Sad. Beautiful.

If you didn’t have a suitable surname, what would you have called the band?
The Finklesteins.

What are your musical influences?
Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Tori Amos, Tracy Chapman, Prince, Queen.  So many… but that’ll do for now!

Do your music icons inspire your style?
In a way I suppose they do.  We are kind of a Debbie Harry/Stevie Nicks mash up when it comes to clothes.

You have an amazing stage look. How do you dress when you’re off-duty?
Similar but maybe a touch less elaborate.

How often do you Google yourselves?
Our Mom has us on Google Alert and sends us all the nice reviews.

You formed the band ten years ago – are people surprised to learn you have four albums under your belt?
Yeah some people are.  We do have some faithful followers that have been with us from the start.

Which of your albums is your favourite?
I love our newest one and I love Thirteen Tales Of Love & Revenge. The first two were made when we were really young and naive so when I listen to them I don’t really recognize myself in the songs.

Your audience – like your music – tends to be extremely chilled. Would you love a bit of crowd surfing or moshing at a Pierces gig, just the once?
The crowds are getting a bit more rowdy since we’ve been playing festivals. I think some of our first shows here in London were filled with a lot of press and label people which always makes for a more chilled crowd, but as our real fans start to make it out it’s been more upbeat so there may be some crowd surfing yet!

If you were not in a band, what would you do?
I would still make music and paint, make jewellery, cook….  maybe start a commune!

Catch the gals live on the festival circuit this summer – iTunes Festival, Summer Sundae Weekender and V – and in the meantime look with your face at their swoonsome video for It Will Not Be Forgotten (out in the UK 8th August).
Oh. And FYI: the ’70s styles worn by the girls in the vid (like the Oscar de la Renta teal gown and the Liberty black and gold cape) were mostly shopped from London vintage emporiums Atelier Mayer and Sarah Bird. Stylist’s secrets and that…

They live in London now, you know (am sure you probably DID know that… but we didn’t). We want to BE them…
