Blow Out (and about) // We Wish we were in Rio

Who: Guanabara

What (it says on the flyer): Rio Carnival 2011

Where: Parker Street, WC2B 5PW.

When: Thursday 3rd March- Tuesday 8th March.

We thought it was was getting warmer. It lied. Just to rub it in it’s only Carnival time in Rio. So while we are NOT getting out our Summer clothes they will be shaking it in feathers. Bastards. For some reason there are still a few Brazilians who will be keeping us company in Blighty and hosting an extra long weekend full of fun at Guanabara.

Starting on Thursday with their ‘Carnival Launch Party’ with live performances from Sol Dancers and the Carnival Kings and Queens of the Maracatu Court, Estrela do Norte, Eri Okan and Rio Samba with Bloco da Saudade and sets from DJ Trever Brazil, DJ Limão and Jimmy Jam to ease you into the carnival carnage.

Friday sees the crew from ‘London School of Samba’ open the celebrations with a parade of dancing and percussion with lots of sparkling feathery costumes for you to feast your eyes and ears on. A selection of DJs will be busting out the latin house and carnival tunes all night.

On Saturday bring a mask for the BAL MASQUÉ with DJ’s The Brazilian Knights and live music from Ritmos Da Cidade. Masked balls are a staple in Carnival celebrations. They will be handing out free masks but we advise you get all arts and crafts on this and Blue Peter yourself something bad ass.

Sunday is Forrónaval . With live percussionist beating the hell out this weekend. More dancing to this hip swivelling Brazilian dance and music rhythm. DJs will be mixing Forró and Carnival tunage all night. Get there early for a free Forró dance class so you don’t look like a dick.

‘The Guanabara Social Club’ celebrates ‘Country and Carnival’ on Monday. With Samba, Batucada and cocktail masterclasses for you to roll your sleeves up and get involved in. As well as DJs playing old school and new wave Carnival music they will be previewing samba and carnival films on their big fat screens.

If you are still shaking it by Tuesday you can hit ‘The Zumba Carnival Finale’ with Zumba sessions and a performance from the girls only Bateria Nota10 featuring Elisangela Da Bahia. With lots of Carnival Street party style fun and DJ sets making sure Carnival 2011 is one (hangover) we never forget.

Go. Steal ideas and copy them in 6 months at Notting Hill. Also don’t tell Guanabara what an ‘Hour’ means because their ‘Happy Hour’ lasts from 2 hours to all fricking night long. Woo.
