Inspect our gadgets // Samsung Galaxy 2 (7.0) WiFi Tablet review

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) is a no-nonsense, small but perfectly formed tablet that makes for easy web-browsing from the comfort of your sofa, watching videos on the go and sharing all your social media shizzle. We gave this gadget it a reet good reviewing

The gadget
The Samsung Galaxy 2 7.0” Wi-Fi Tablet.

The damage
£129 at the Carphone Warehouse.

The colour
Garnet red (Carphone Warehouse exclusive colour, y’all) offsets AW13’s penchant for punky tartan a treat. Standard silver and white versions are also available.

The launch:
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) basically launched in 2012 but this year Samsung upgraded its Operating System to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and introduced the limited edition red colourway.

Handbag test:
Smaller, lighter and more portable than the iPad, the slimline Tab’s screen measures up at a sexy 7 inches and, weighing just 345g, it’s one of the lightest in its class. You could therefore chuck it into the likes of a cavernous Mulbery Bayswater bag or Prada Saffiano with absolute ease (my makeup bag weighs more for chrissakes!) but it would just about fit into Valentino’s Rockstud clutch bag OR squeeze into a pocket (probably not your Disco Pants though).

Bits to brag to your friends about:

  • It comes with an Ice Cream Sandwich. No really. That’s what Android’s latest OS is called, meaning you can enjoy the most ramped up, up-to-the-minute features and hordes of apps. Better web browsing as well as faster response and screen transitions make for a great user experience. The face recognition for unlocking the lock screen is also very secret agent-esque.
  • A shit-tonne of apps. Not only do you get instant access to the 450,000+ apps in the Google Play store, but to the huge selection of exclusive Samsung-only apps, found in the improved Samsung Hubs.
  • Say cheese. The cheeky 3MP camera lets you capture images while out and about, without looking like a total iPad wanker.
  • Share like you just don’t care. You can download photos or films to store on your tablet, then using AllShare Play push them wirelessly onto your DLNA-enabled TV or computer to watch later on the big screen. Cooooool.
  • Hang out. Starting a group video session (oo-er, sounds well dodge) with Google+ Hangouts is a piece of piss. The free pre-installed ChatON instant messaging app connects your friends and family no matter what device or platform they’re using. It’s got loads of unique features too like Group Chat, Multimedia Transmission, Buddy Interaction and more. We cannot confirm if it also does the weekly shop and wipes your arse for you.

The verdict:
If you’re after a superbly portable tablet that’s a step up from your iPhone and designed to give you a cracking multimedia experience, we say give the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 a go.
