This is rather excellent.
It’s a tribute choon to the late and great R&B songstress Aaliyah. Brit singers Katy B and Jessie Ware appear to feel a tad threatened by her now legendary mystical presence and take it in turns to beg her not to be so damn hot/move in on their man.
I imagine them glaring at Aaliyah through narrowed eyes, giving her ‘evils’:
Aaliyah please! This is green envy. Why must you taunt me girl?
Aptly, for a track dedicated to a 90s singer, it more than nods to the decade of dance, grroving along with bleeps, drum programming and keys. Plus, of course, the smokin’ diva-esque vocals layered over the top. It is what one might call ‘retro future dance’.
Then there’s also the obvious comparison to Brandy and Monica’s 1998 duet: The Boy Is Mine. This is the 2013 version.
