Blow Out (and about) // Messing About On The River

What: The Boat Race www.theboatrace.org

Where: Starting at Putney Bridge through to Chiswick Bridge on the River Thames

When: Saturday 26th March 2011 17:00

Here at Le Blow we’ll be donning our straw boaters and making like salty old sea wags this Saturday for the 157th Boat Race.  Eight athletic, lantern-jawed poshos wedged into a narrow vessel (not forgetting a shrieking Cox), splashing and thrusting their way through the shopping trolleys of the River Thames.  What’s not to love? Personally, my buoyancy aid is likely to be a barrel of Youngs in a riverside beer garden.

Most years I completely miss the actual race due to the fact I’m about as tall as Janette Krankie and getting served in some of the pubs along the course may leave you reaching for the drip tray.  Get in there seriously early to avoid the Mayfair swan-munchers and heaving crowds.

Some places certainly worth a punt (er, sorry) on Boat Race day:

There are various ‘Boat Race in the Park’ events staged in Bishop’s Park, Fulham and Furnivall Gardens, Hammersmith with big screens and munch on offer.  Failing that, a tesco bag full of Kestrel super strength and a pair of trusty wayfarers will see you right. Oarsome!
