Five things we learnt from… The Model Agency

Channel 4’s addictive new fly-on-the-wall fashion show, The Model Agency, premiered (geddit?!) last night, and we were naturally glued to our TV screens.

Featuring the trials and tribulations of the dedicated staff at Premier Model Management, we saw wannabe-models have their dreams crushed before their eyes with a single line (the age-old ‘height’ excuse) and others (the gorgeous india) give up on “every girl’s dream”; walking the runways in New York (and probably all over the world, too). It might all seem like a glamorous business, but The Model Agency showed us that really, it isn’t. Here’s what else we learnt…

1. The world of modelling is unforgiving.

As Premier boss Carole points out; if you mess it up once, they won’t give you another chance. Miss your opportunity, and you miss out. An appropriate life lesson when you think about it, really.

2. Model agents are human too. (As are models).

Seeing New Faces booker Annie’s tears at the dilemmas 16 year old model India was facing was near-heartbreaking. As she so wisely stated “we’re responsible for these girls; we can’t mess it up”. It’s nice to know that the industry isn’t exploiting these young girls like The Daily Mail would lead you to believe.

3. Don’t bring your mum to meet your potential employers.

You wouldn’t bring your mum to a job interview, would you? Then WHY are you bringing her to a meeting with a modelling agency? Mum should know that Premier are a top respectable agency, not a dodgy child-trafficking scheme. Stay at home, mums, you’ve been warned.

4. Working with male models far more relaxed than working with their female counterparts.

Because “they’re nicer”. Or maybe you just prefer it because you get to stare at beautiful men all day, eh love?

5. Model agents need silky chickens.

Just ’cause.

Catch The Model Agency, Wednesdays at 10pm on Channel 4.
