Has there been a more influential clothing item so far in 2014?
It’s official – as seen on the catwalks of DSQuared, Gareth Pugh, and obviously Westwood, a big hat is apparently shaping up to be the must-have accessory of Spring, all thanks to Mr Happy himself.
Last week, we declared Grumpy Cat the most stylish attendee of the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, on account of wearing his Vivienne Westwood Pharrell hat (complemented excellently by his signature look of disdain). Now it seems several style-conscious celebrities are taking it upon themselves to uphold the trend. But are they getting it right? Le Blow investigates…
Well, OBVIOUSLY. He’s tried the Keith Richards bandana, it didn’t quite work out. It’s clear that a more subtle take on Pharrell’s hat would be next in his headwear journey. He’s clearly studied Pharrell’s use of the Westwood hat, gently co-ordinating the grey colour with his check shirt. A good start.
OK, so this is a bit of a cheat, since Jared rocked this hat all the way back in February, not long after Pharrell wore the original incarnation of the Westwood hat. We like that Jared has eschewed the ‘jaunty hipster’ angle that Harry so easily fell for, however, as certified Leto fans, we’d prefer to see those gorgeous locks free flowing. You don’t need a hat, Jared. This hat is wearing you, not the other way around.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard
First couple in oversized hats alert! Sadly, it’s not working. Mostly because Johnny Depp looks more like an ageing Columbian cocaine baron that a Pharrell fan. Amber does slightly better with her floppy fedora, but let’s be honest, standing next to Johnny looking SO AWFUL, she kind of looks awful too, by association.
So, yeah, we know we already talked about this one, but it’s just too brilliant to pass up mentioning again. The mix of brown and beige hues (hat and fur, natch), the way one whisker slightly curls above the rim of the hat, not to mention the ‘just right’ angle. This is perfection. Harry, Jared, Johnny, Amber, and even YOU, Pharrell – you’ve been out-fashioned by a cat.
