Fashspiration of the week // J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons

Fellow shopaholics – HOW exciting is November? Meadham Kirchhoff’s new collection for Topshop is due at the end of the month and Isabel Marant for H&M launches (count the days!) on the 14th.

If that’s not enough, hundreds of coloured balloons (biodegradable, of course) were released this morning to mark the opening of the new J.Crew store on Regent Street. Quite simply, I just don’t know where to look or what to buy first.

Luckily fashspiration is at hand in the shape of J.Crew US Creative Director, Jenna Lyons.

A colourful modern muse with a weakness for New Balance trainers and coffee ice cream, Jenna makes hi-low styling seem effortless. Here’s a few ways she nails it;

Choice is good

Jenna owns infinite outfits and more than 300 pairs of shoes but says it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a white shirt and black pants on less inspired days. It’s all in the detail, a higher waistband or deeper cuff show an appreciation for a modern silhouette and that you’re not a slave to fashion.

Mismatching is key

The J.Crew ethos is that pieces don’t have to coordinate to make an impact. Colour, prints, pumps and gems pretty much sum-up the preppy-chic brand uniform. Plus, bold artful mismatching and unexpected styling is also a great sign of confidence.

Try pairing a luxe skirt with a boyish crisp white cotton tee or midi-lengths with clean minimal trainers.

Jenna loves a trouser and mixes colourful prints or a flash of leopard to balance out her more masculine looks.

Don’t be too precious

Jenna claims she lets her 6-year old son choose her footwear most mornings. That’s gotta the next best thing to having a Clueless-style wardrobe coordinator, right? FRESH.

Note: If you don’t have a 6-year old handy, just try choosing a pair with your eyes closed and then build something fabulous round that. Under no circumstances ask your boyfriend, he knows nothing.

Have a signature

Jenna is a 6-foot fashion guru with distinctive black frames and a penchant for shoulder-robing. Make an everyday look that little more distinctive by adding regular signature styling tricks of your own. Perhaps you just like a red lip or always roll your shirt sleeves – OWN THAT LOOK yah?

Voila! Edgy NY Lyons style in seconds – see you at the till…
