Those clever creative types over at British Airways have launched a great initiative entitled Great Britons to showcase and support new British talents in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.

Three lucky competition winners are, as we speak (type, grunt, whatevs), working with Great British Mentors from Art, Food and Film to contribute to this Great British campaign.

Richard E Grant is making a very important and high brow film (yar yar); Tracy Ermin is decorating a flippin’ aeroplane (OK, how the HELL do I get on THAT flight?!) and Heston Blumenthal is designing the menu for BA flights throughout the Olympics (“would you like the chicken foam or fish fountain madam?”)

And to showcase the competition winners and launch this in style (oh, how we love a launch), BA have gone all Nathan Barley on us and created their very own pop-up aeroplane-themed restaurant named Flight BA2012 Dining Lounge in London’s ‘trendy’ *ahem* Shoreditch.
Hold your freaking horses – now this is right up our street at Le Blow HQ. Plenty of wanky, sorry TRENDY, buzz words we can kerplunk into convo over the next few weeks:
‘Heston, yeah?’
‘Pop-up is the only way to eat these days…’
‘Aeroplane dining, yeah it’s well dench’ (Yes, I’m still trying to make ‘dench’ happen)
TBH any excuse to dress up as an air hostess from the ’60s and hum Busted’s Air Hostess loudly is totally fine by us.
And actually, if you check out the pics it does look pretty darned cool. It’s £50 for a three-course Heston-designed meal and a glass of bubbly, AND a reservation that comes as a boarding card (Fickle? Us? Gimmicky? NEVER.) This may have just nestled itself at the tippety top of our social calendar.
Taking inspiration from Heston’s interest in food heritage, the menu is being inspired by BA menus dating back to 1948 – when the Olympics were last held in London.  The First Class menu which will also be served on board actual BA planes wot fly from July includes:
  • Rillette of mackerel dressed on a pickled cucumber carpaccio with sour dough croutes
  • Potted braised beef, with a potato and horseradish topping served with hispy cabbage, baby carrots and roasted shallots with a rich jus
  • Chilled chocolate fondant with a salted caramel liquid centre, caramel sauce and spun sugar topped with hazelnuts
De-to-the-LISH!
Reservations are now, unfortunately, full. HOWEVER you can pop along for a drink and check out the gallery and winner’s film – PLUS a cheeky heads-up that with cancellations allowed up to 48 hours before, you should totally keep your eye on the BA Facebook page for updates and last minute booking availabilty.
Trust me, this is a flight you definitely don’t want to miss.
Flight BA2012 takes off (LOLZ, it doesn’t actually take off, it just opens) from April 4 to April 17 2012. Natch.
