Blow Out (and about) // For the LOL of cats: an exhibition of photos of funny felines

Cats are just bonkers, eh? Drinking from taps, pushing their squishy faces into a loaves of Hovis and manically playing the piano whilst wearing a jumper.

Yeah, whether you’re a feline fan or not, you will no doubt be familiar with seeing pics of funny cats on the interwebs, affectionately known as ‘LOLcats’.

Note to Louis Walsh: LOL means ‘laugh out loud’, not ‘lots of love’, yeah? You old fool.

Now, The Photographers Gallery has filled a void we didn’t even know existed, with the launch of their latest exhibition, dedicated to pictures of silly cats. Yuh-huh, we give you:

What: For the LOL of Cats: Felines, Photography and the Web
When: 12 October to 16 January 2013
Where: The Photographer’s Gallery, 16-18 Ramillies Street, London W1F 7LW
Getting there: Nearest tube – Oxford Circus

This is our kind of #cultureandthat at Le Blow. The exhibition’s main focuses are: cat scanning, cat breading, cat shaming and The Infinite Cat Project (a website containing over 1,700 images of cats staring at each other via computer screens). Uhh-maze.

There’ll also be #historyandthat with the inclusion of Harry Pointer’s (slightly spooksome) Brighton Cats from the 1870s – y’know sepia shots of Victorian cats rollerskating and stuff. Sure.

The main part of the exhibition is dedicated to the bit we’re really all interested in (let’s be honest) – the recent online phenomenon of LOLcats: yes, that is images of cats accompanied by amusing (yet often grammatically incorrect) text.

Cooper cat photography

And that’s not all. Actual cats have also taken feline photos too. Yup, American short-hair Cooper and British moggy Nancy bean (got a LOT of time for cats with surnames) have also been commissioned by the gallery to snap a cat’s eye view via cameras attached to their collars.

We think think this may well end up being our favourite part of the entire show. Meow!
